Led by representatives from the Want Want China Times Media Group, several dozens of people from the print, broadcast, new media and creative industries in Taiwan are taking part in the forum, where they were told it is their ‘duty’ to promote Chinese culture and cross-Strait unification.
Several dozens of journalists from Taiwan were present at the opening ceremony of the 4th “Cross-Strait Media People Summit” (兩岸媒體人峰會/兩岸媒體人北京峰會) in Beijing on May 10, during which participants heard an earful about their “responsibility” to promote “peaceful reunification,” the so-called “1992 consensus” and the “one country, two systems” formula.
More than 200 representatives from 100 media organizations from Taiwan and China were present at the event, co-organized by the Beijing Newspaper Group and Taiwan’s Want Want China Times Media Group (旺旺中時媒體集團). According to the China Times, a number of media organizations signed a series of cooperation agreements at the gathering (also known as the Beijing Taiwan Media Forum), which consists of one main forum and three roundtable discussions.
After meeting with the delegates at the opening ceremony at Beijing Hotel, Wang Yang (汪洋) (pictured above), a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Chinese Communist Party Central Committee and chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC, 中國人民政治協商會議), shared his views on Xi Jinping’s Jan. 2 address to Taiwanese compatriots, a talk that had focused largely on “peaceful reunification,” the “1992 consensus” and “one country, two systems.”
Wang said that in the era of China’s “great rejuvenation,” both “time” and “potential” were on China’s side, adding that “Taiwan independence” and “foreign forces” were basically lost causes.
Cross-Strait media, he added, should shoulder the social responsibility of safeguarding and promoting the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations. Media on both sides must “uphold national ethics, fulfill their social responsibilities, and jointly play the role of communicating to people on both sides of the Strait by promoting Chinese culture, deepening the integration of emotions, and continuing to promote the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations and promote the process of peaceful reunification of the motherland, and strive to realize the China dream.”
Want Want Group (旺旺集團) Chairman Tsai Eng-meng (蔡衍明), his son, Want Want China Times Media Group Chairman Tsai Shao-chung (蔡紹中), and Want Want China Times Media Group Vice Chairman and former Taichung Mayor Jason Hu (胡志強) headed the Taiwan delegation. Hsu Tao (徐濤) Global Vice President of VIA and HTC Group (威盛與宏達電集團) (affiliated with Cher Wang/HTC/TVBS), was also present as a consultant.
Zhu Jingruo (朱競若), president of the People’s Daily Beijing branch, Luo Guojun (駱國駿), president of the Xinhua News Agency Beijing branch, and Zhao Jingyun (趙靖云), president of Beijing Daily, represented the Chinese side.
Over the past decade, the Want Want China Times Media Group has been heavily involved in the promotion of cross-Strait media and cultural exchanges. It was revealed last month that Want Want China Holdings (中國旺旺控股有限公司) has received as much as NT$15.26 billion (US$495 million) in subsidies from China since 2007, fueling long-held suspicions that the group, which owns TV stations and print media in Taiwan, may be engaging in information/political warfare on Beijing’s behalf. Rumors have also been circulating around Taiwan for several months now that many media have been “co-opted” by Beijing. And in a recent disclosure to the Legislative Yuan, the National Security Bureau revealed that it knew of at least one media organization in Taiwan that gets its editorial cues from Beijing and is complicit in spreading pro-China disinformation. It is also widely expected that China will wage a massive disinformation campaign via social and traditional media in the lead-up to the January 2020 general elections.
The first cross-Strait media forum was held in Beijing on Nov. 6-7, 2015. At the time, there were 34 representatives from Taiwan and 45 from China. As we can see, the number of Taiwanese participants has more than doubled since 2015.
Below is a list, as it appears in the conference booklet, of the about 70 media personnel from Taiwan (and a few others) who are attending this year’s event (name, organization):
